A fascinating site to see while on a sightseeing tour in the city of Lucknow is the Hussainabad Clock Tower. Situated close to Rumi Darwaza, the Husainabad Clock Tower was built by the Hussainabad Trust in 1881.
The building of this architectural wonder was initiated by Nawab Nasir-ud-din. Soaring gracefully to a height of 221 ft, this impressive edifice was constructed as a tribute to the inaugural Lt. Gov of the United Province of Awadh Sir George Couper.
In the midst of the city's chaos, this historical tourist site in Lucknow, commonly known as Ghantaghar, stands as the tallest of its type in India. The interior of this essential location in Lucknow is constructed from gunmetal, a unique material that is rarely used in buildings.
This construction from the 19th century was intended to serve as a replica of London's BIG BEN Clock Tower. Consequently, the design of Hussainabad Clock Tower exhibits a significant impact from Gothic and Victorian architectural styles. After 27 years of being nonfunctional, it was decided by the district administration in 2010 to replace the clock in the tower. Nevertheless, Captain Paritosh Chauhan and Akhilesh Agarwal - two supporters, suggested to the administration to fix the clock. They toiled for three years, fixing the clock without seeking any compensation and making sure the clock's charm stayed unspoiled.
Architecture
Created by Roskell Payne, the design of Hussainabad Clock Tower features Gothic-Victorian architecture. The clock, constructed from gunmetal, features a sizable pendulum measuring 14 feet in length. In addition, the design of the face of this ancient clock features a shape resembling a flower with 12 petals. At that time, the total expense for building the Husainabad Clock Tower was Rs. 1.75 lakh.
